What You Must
Have (in order to have a website)
There are many OPTIONAL features that a website may have. A few
examples:
- eCommerce
- Flash® Animation
- Videos
- Music
- Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption
However, one of the questions we are always asked is, "What MUST I have in order to have a website?"
There are two items which are necessary:
- A Domain Name , i.e., "thisismywebsite.com", or "here-it-is.net"
- A Server (the "host" for the website so that anyone in the world may view it on the world wide web.)
From that point, files must be uploaded to the server so that visitors may see what you want them to see.
Our proposals will always include a domain name and a "virtual hosting" server. If you have an existing server, we will transfer your domain to our servers, as we do not build websites on unknown servers or servers without adequate security or support.
The domain name you desire may or may not be available, as there are domain name speculators (see domain name speculation) who have bought up almost every single-word-or two-word domain name that exists. However, there are several Topn a Level Domains (TLDs), i.e., "com", "net", "us", "org", etc., and the International Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) will add more as necessary. With a little ingenuity, such as the use of hyphens, or multiple-word domain names, one is usally able to obtain an appropriate domain name. However, if your name or company name is McDonald, don't expect to find mcdonald.com available.
